OWENS, Alfred Paul “Tex”

OWENS, Alfred Paul “Tex” of Bellaire, was called home by his Lord and Savior on February 9, 2014 at Liza’s Place in Wheeling, WV. He was surrounded by his family and friends.

Tex was born July 1, 1922, the son of the John and Mary (Mentz) Owens. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, John Owens, Tom Owens and William (Bill) Owens, and his first wife, Hazel Jean Spencer Owens Fletcher.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Helen Carpenter Smathers Owens of Bellaire, OH, his sister, Alice Kelly of IN as well as his children: Bonnie Owens of Neffs, OH, Alfred “Butch” (Dorothy) Owens of PA, Penny (Rick Montoya) Owens of TX, Betty (David) Dorff of Martins Ferry, OH, Rose Owens Campbell of Bellaire, OH, Larry (Patty) Owens of PA, Carrie (Dick) Edgar of MA, Paul (Lydia) Smathers of Bridgeport, OH, Donald Smathers of Neffs, OH, Richard (Christina) Smathers of Powhatan Point, OH, Randy (Terry) Smathers of CO, a grandson, Raymond (R.C.) Smathers of Bellaire, OH, Jimmy (Ruthy) Owens of Bridgeport, OH, and John (Rosetta) Owens of Martins Ferry, OH. He is also survived by 40 grand children, 44 great-grand children, numerous great- great-grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition he is survived by his care givers Kim and Angie and his best friend, his dog, PuBear.

Tex was a World War II Army Veteran having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a life member of the DAV and a member of the American Legion. He was a retired sheet metal worker and a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union of Martins Ferry, OH. He was a former member of the Neffs Volunteer Fire Department.

Tex was very active in the Shadyside Church of the Nazarene. His commitment to the work of the Lord was clear for all to see. He made many trips with Men in Missions to Mexico, the Bahamas, South and Central America and the Navajo Reservation in Arizona. He also served as a missionary in Papua New Guinea. He worked for many years at the Sun Valley Indian School in Sun Valley, AZ, where he also served as an Aux. Deputy Sheriff and the pastor of a small Nazarene church on the Navajo Reservation.

Visitation will be held at the Bauknecht-Altmeyer Funeral Home & Crematory, 441 37th Street Bellaire, OH, Friday, February 14, 2014 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, February 15, 2014 from 10 a.m. until time of funeral service at 2 p.m. with Rev. Dennis Hancock officiating.

Burial follows in Greenwood Cemetery Bellaire OH. Belmont County Veterans Association will conduct full Military Graveside Honors.
