Lawrence Joseph Kalaskey, Jr., “Larry”, 74, of Glen Dale, W.Va., passed away Thursday, May 1, 2014, at his home.
Larry was born July 12, 1939 in Glen Dale, the son of the late Lawrence Joseph and Rose (Gay) Kalaskey. He was a 1959 graduate of Moundsville High School and attended West Liberty State College. He was a member and usher at St. Jude Catholic Church, Glen Dale.
Larry was a self-employed automobile dealer for many years. He owned and operated Kalaskey & Faulk Auto Dealership, and then Larry’s Auto & Boat Sales from 1995 until the time of his retirement. He originally worked for Donald Smith Motors in Glen Dale from 1962 to 1964; Sam Yanen Ford Dealership from 1964 to 1976; and Glen Dale Motors from 1994 to 1995. He was also a bus driver for Marshall County Schools and was employed at Oglebay Park’s Train Room for 3 years.
Larry was also a long time member of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce. He was a member of the Moundsville Jaycees, the Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28., and the former Moundsville Elks Lodge No. 282, where he was past Exulted Ruler. He coached Pee Wee and Pony League Baseball in Glen Dale and enjoyed boating, golf and collecting trains.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Breck Michael Laido; and brother-in-law, Patrick Principe.
Larry is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Janet Rose (Principe) Kalaskey; two children, Dr. Lawrence J. Kalaskey, III and his wife, Traci of South Charleston, W.Va. and Monica A. Laido and her husband, Michael of Fenton, Mich.; a brother-in-law, John Principe, Jr. and his wife, Karen of Martins Ferry, Ohio; grandchildren, Miranda Kalaskey, Torren Kalaskey, L. Joseph Kalaskey IV, Jacob Kalaskey, Patrick Kalaskey, Payden Kalaskey and Sky Rose Laido; a nephew, John Principe, III and his wife, Michelle of Morgantown, W.Va.; and a niece, Jennifer Braddock and her husband, Ben of Arlington, Va..
Friends will be received at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, Lutes & Kirby-Vance Chapel, 118 Grant Avenue, Moundsville, on Thursday, May 8, 2014, from 7-9 p.m. and Friday, May 9, 2014, from noon to 2 and 7-9 p.m. The Wheeling Elks Lodge No. 28 will have a service at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jude Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, 2014, with the Rev. Raju Antony as celebrant. Entombment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery Chapel Mousoleum, Wheeling, W.Va.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to either, Catholic Charities Neighborhood Center, 125 18th Street, Wheeling, WV 26003, or St. Jude Catholic Church, 710 Jefferson Avenue, Glen Dale, WV 26038.
