David “Dave” Johnston, 76, of Bethesda, OH, died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018, at Wheeling Hospital.

He was born June 17, 1941, in Wheeling, WV, a son of the late Francis and Caroline (Stein) Johnston. He was a 1959 graduate of Triadelphia High School. He was retired from the Northern Panhandle Head Start Program, where he served as a bus driver and teacher’s aid. He loved the children, and the children and parents fondly called him Mr. Dave.

He was a former Ohio County Deputy Sheriff. He was also the former chief of security at OVMC and worked in patient care. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Wheeling and served in the U.S. Army Reserves.

He is survived by his loving wife, Joyce Reed Bumgardner Johnston; children, Deborah Wyss of Oak Harbor, OH, and Matthew Johnston of Martinsburg, WV; stepson, Shannon McMillan of Knox, IN; stepdaughter, Tina (Greg) Bamberger of Wheeling; brother, Ronald C. Johnston of Wheeling; special niece, Karen (James) Leite of Delaware, OH; and special friend, Brad Hufeld of Wheeling, WV.

Friends will be received Saturday, Jan. 13, 2018, from 1 p.m. until time of service at 4 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 1470 National Rd., Wheeling, WV, 26003 with Pastor Darrin Wright officiating.
