Relay for Life plans taking shape
THE last team meeting before this year’s Harrison County Relay for Life is scheduled to be held Tuesday, June 9, 6:30 p.m. and organizers say there are several things that must be finalized that evening.
All team members are asked to turn in any money from candy bar sales or fundraisers that evening.
Team shirts will be available for pickup during the meeting and those with lane sponsors that are to be indentified in the program should bring that information to the meeting or email it as soon as possible. All luminarie orders should be turned in during the meeting and each team is to bring at least one item for the silent auction.
This year’s American Cancer Society Harrison County Relay for Life will be held Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11 at Dr. James Z. Scott Field in Scio. The public is welcome to attend.

A HAMLOAF and baked steak dinner will be held June 12 at the Jewett Volunteer Fire Department from11a.m. to 1 p.m. Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for child’s portions. Each meal includes vegetables, salad, bread, dessert and beverage.
THE PARISHIONERS of the Scott Memorial United Methodist Church continue their year-long celebration of 200 Years of Methodism in Cadiz and the 200th birthday of Bishop Matthew Simpson.
With 2011 being the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War, upcoming events will tie in with this theme.
The celebration will conclude on June 18 and19 with a Civil War Encampment on the church grounds at 817 East Market Street, Cadiz.
O.V.I. Co. B. Living Historian Group which represents the men that formed in Cadiz in 1861 and marched on foot to Columbus, Ohio to muster into the U.S. Union Army will be participating in the encampment. Among the original group was Joe Dickerson, who left Cadiz as a private and came back a captain.
Along with the reenactment will be a program at Dickerson Church, on the history of the church and Captain Joe Dickerson. Also, near Spring Street in Cadiz, there will be a marker placed where Bishop Matthew Simpson gave his first sermon. Concluding Saturday’s activities there will be an evening program on Bishop Simpson at the church.
On Sunday, June 19 at 10:45 a.m. the celebration will conclude with a worship service at Scott Memorial Church.

A TALENT Contest will be held Wednesday, July 6, 7 p.m., at the midway entertainment tent during the Harrison County Fair.
All entries will be pre-screened at the discretion of the Harrison County Agricultural Society with 20 acts to be chose for participation.
Audition packets must include a CD, DVD or VHS of the applicant’s performance, a photograph of the applicant, list of items used in act, type of performance, length of performance and all pertinent personal information.
The following rules apply:
1. The talent showcase is open to anyone regardless of residency.
2. Audition packets must be sent to P.O. Box 16, Hopedale, Ohio 43976 no later than June 4, 2011.
3. Those chosen to participate will be notified by June 11.
4. Two microphones will be provided. Any other necessary equipment is the responsibility of the participant.
5. There is no entry fee, participants will not be compensated for admission costs.
6. Each act must be 6 minutes or less in length.
7. A panel of judges will select the top five acts. Once the top five acts are chosen they will then perform a second time to be placed 1st through 5th place. Decision of the judges is final.
8. Five places will be paid out: first – $500, second-$400, third-$300, fourth-$200 and fifth-$100.

A CONCERT featuring Matt O’Ree Band will be held July 7, 6 p.m., at Sally Buffalo Park, Wallace Lodge Outdoor Stage in Cadiz.
Sean Carney’s Blues For A Cure presents a free public concert benefiting Harrison County American Cancer Society… Relay For Life Team The Funky Monkeys.
Blues For A Cure and local recording studio Tony’s Treasures Productions want to give back to the community and providing the local area with award winning musical talent. They are teaming up to bring three award winning guitarists to the county.
This free public concert will feature the 2006 Guitar Center “King Of The Blues” national Champion Matt O’Ree band from New Jersey. Special guests are 2005 International Blues Challenge “Albert King” guitarist award winner Jonn Richardson from Houston, Texas and 2007 International Blues Challenge “Albert King” guitarist award winner Sean Carney from Columbus.
The evening will open with local teen talent Sam VanFossen, a music major at the renowned Belmont University School of Music in Nashville.
Freewill donations will be accepted for The Funky Monkeys Relay For Life team, as well as items available for auction. Food, water and soda will be available for purchase, catered by John Hursey’s Canal House and The Funky Monkeys.
Please bring your own beverages (BYOB), lawn chairs and blankets.
The concert will be moved to the barn at Sally Buffalo in case of rain.
