Summer fun at St. Clairsville Public Library
“Summer afternoon Summer afternoon The two most beautiful words in the English language.” Henry James
It’s a wonderful thing, summertime, especially for library staff. While everyone else is getting out of school and relaxing their schedules a bit, we are working hard to prepare for the busiest, most exciting time of our year! Summer is when libraries really shine.
This year’s Summer Reading Program at St. Clairsville Public Library is set to be one of our best on record. From Monday June 2 through Saturday July 26, everyone in the family will be able to enjoy great programs and register for a chance to win prizes even the adults! Here’s the breakdown:
Visit the Children’s area and help choose a name for our summer pet, which will reside with us through the end of the Summer Reading Program and go home with some lucky family at the end. Also, make sure to check out the giant robot great for family photo ops.
Every week will feature fun, science-themed contests, programs, crafts, and prizes. The first week is registration, refreshments and crafts. Week two brings our Transformers programs create a robot of your own! Other programs will feature Silly Science Experiments, Boats, and even a visit from the Zoo! Babies aren’t left out they can attend our Fizz, Boom, Babies program. We’ll finish off the summer with a big party that you won’t want to miss.
Teens (entering grades 6-12) have a lot to discover at the library this summer. We have rolled out the lime green carpet for you in our new teen area. We’ve added a lot of brand new books to the teen collection, and with some help from the 21st Century Grant, created a small teen lounge with a 3-D TV, Playstation 4, and other fun features exclusively for use by teens!
Teens can earn raffle tickets by reading and attending programs; these raffle tickets can then be entered in a prize drawing for chances to win great prizes, like gift cards, an electric scooter, or a Nintendo 3DS portable gaming console!
Our weekly programs for teens include creating a giant marble roller coaster from the balcony in the front lobby and exploring the science behind the Titanic Disaster. The final program is a space mission at the Challenger Learning Center at Wheeling Jesuit University.
Adults Literary Elements
We haven’t forgotten adults this summer they can register for Summer Reading too! They will also receive raffle tickets for a chance to win prizes after reading or attending a program. We’ve gotten some great prize donations from local organizations including Pizza Milano, the Wheeling Nailers, and Rugged Cross Championship Wrestling.
Our adult Summer Reading Calendar includes programs every week, such as book discussions, Yoga/Pilates classes, and a great digital photography class and contest series compliments of the Times Leader. Our popular Recipe Round-Up programs will continue this summer with Italian and Picnic/Luau themes, and the Quilts of Valor quilting group will be meeting here as well to create some comfort and warmth for our servicemen and women.
As you can see, we have a lot going on too much to include everything in one short article! Stop by the library on your next visit to downtown St. Clairsville and pick up our summer schedules of events. While you’re here, whisper “Fizz, Boom, Win” to our front desk staff and be entered for a chance to win a gift card for the best treat of any summer ice cream!
