Youth is Served

OFTEN TIMES our young people get a bum rap. We frequently hear about bad deeds or trouble that youths have encountered. We believe that such occurrences are in the minority.

A group of Shadyside High School students is proof positive that our youth do make a difference, in a good way.

The Tigers’ home economics class made items to be donated to the victims of the tragic Sandy Hook school shooting in Connecticut. When the home ec students found out that the Sandy Hook families halted accepting donations, the Shadyside youths instead donated the gifts to the Harmony House in honor of those killed in the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Harmony House is a friendly shelter for abused children or those suspected of such deplorable behavior. The blankets, pillows and stuffed animals (48 pieces in all) made by the Shadyside students will be given to children to help comfort them during their tough times.

We commend the Shadyside home economics students and their instructors for their selfless and compassionate gesture. Their thoughtfulness and vision will give vulnerable and hurting children a dose of comfort while also letting them realize they are not alone in their time of despair.

This marks the second straight year that the Shadyside High home economics students have aided Harmony House. Last year they donated a similar number of items.

It also sparked an interest in Tiger Town, as much of the community got involved, making monetary donations.

The Shadyside home economic students reinforce our belief in our youth. We praise them for aiding fellow youngsters in time of distress.
