JOHN KASICH has made a prudent decision.
Ohio’s governor last week announced that he was appointing Frank Fregiato as judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Belmont County.
Fregiato succeeds Judge Jennifer Sargus. She is retiring after more than 20 years of professional and dedicated service in that position. Sargus was a credit to the judicial profession.
Sargus leaves some big shoes to fill. Fregiato, however, comes well groomed for his new post.
He currently is judge for Northern Division Court, assuming that post in 1997. During that time, Fregiato has pioneered a popular program, where all Belmont County high schools play host to his court for live sessions. It exposes students to the consequences of bad decisions.
Fregiato has received state and national recognition for this program. He also instituted a non-violent offender program whereby defendants undertake service for Belmont County communities, such as painting town and township buildings and cleaning cemeteries, roads and streams.
Fregiato is special counsel to the state attorney general and admitted before all Ohio courts, including the Ohio Supreme Court, the Federal District Court, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the U.S. Supreme Court. He is a member of the American, Ohio, National Italian-American and Belmont County Bar Associations, former member of the Ohio State Bar Banking Committee and Ohio State Bar Ethics Committee, past President of Belmont County Bar Association, former Law Director of the Village of Bellaire and former Solicitor of the Villages of Belmont and Brookside.
While his legal pedigree is above reproach, so is his academic resume. The Martins Ferry High grad received his BA degree from The Ohio State University with Pi Sigma Alpha Political Science and Phi Betta Kappa honors. He also received his law degree from The Ohio State University, graduating in the top 5 percent of his class with Order of the Coif honors.
Fregiato completes a well-rounded portfolio by being a highly involved individual in regard to community events and organizations, far too numerous to list here.
Fregiato exudes passion and energy in all his undertakings. Those qualities, along with his history of being tough and fair in the courtoom, make him an ideal fit for a challenging test.
