Red Kettles

THANKSGIVING IS less than two weeks away while Christmas is just 41 days in the offing.

It is a festive and upbeat time of the year. Unfortunately, the good times are not shared by all in the Ohio Valley.

The holiday season can be tough on those less fortunate or under privileged. Countless residents know that feeling all too well.

So the holiday season also lends itself to being the giving season. People tend to be more generous during this time of the season. That works well as many of our local residents need extra assistance to make Christmas a little merrier for their families.

Many avenues of giving are available. One of the most popular recently opened its campaign.

The Belmont County Salvation Army and Ohio Valley Mall came together Thursday to kick off Kettle Season. Each year, the Salvation Army collects for hundreds of local residents who need a helping hand during the holidays.

The Kettle campaign goes a long way in making Christmas merrier for those who might not otherwise experience holiday joy.

The Giving Tree program, sponsored by The Times Leader, also took flight Thursday. It provides new toys and clothes for children in need through donor support. It is heartbreaking knowing that some children may wake up Christmas morning with nothing to unwrap.

With that said, we challenge all those in the Ohio Valley with the resources to please donate to a most worthwhile cause. We all can be Santa Clauses by digging into our pockets and making Christmas a little brighter for those who need it.
