THE CRUSADE to generate support in the fight against cancer has never been more passionate. In Belmont County, it has mushroomed into amazing proportions.
That was reaffirmed last week when the Belmont County Relay for Life held its annual “SOUPer” Celebration. It was revealed at the session that the 2013 campaign was successful, extremely successful.
The local cancer fundraisers brought in $90,000. That impressive sum is nearly $30,000 above the group’s goal.
We all know that Eastern Ohio is not in the healthiest of economic times, although they may be on the rise due to oil and gas. So generating $90,000 in Belmont County for cancer research is truly amazing.
Cancer survivors, relayers and volunteers attended the “SOUPer” Celebration.
Special awards were handed out to those who helped make the 2013 Relay a success, including the Excellence in Mission Award presented to The Times Leader. We are humbled and proud in being honored for championing such a worthwhile cause.
Other awards included: Excellence in Income Development Award – Hocking Eye Care; Volunteer of the Year Award – Barb Ballint and Maggie Truchan; and President’s Award – Tina Bissett and Lisa Kazmirski from Tomorrow’s Corner.
Moreover, the Belmont County Relay for Life was the recipient of the All American Award in the East Central Division. It is given to communities that show growth, retention, Relay branding, diversity and leadership in incorporating the 5Ds (leadership, team, survivor, event and fundraising development) within Relay events and throughout the year.
The East Central Division includes all of Ohio and Pennsylvania. Such a broad geographic region places greater significance on the award.
The “SOUPer” Celebration served as a kick off for the 2014 Belmont County Relay for Life. The theme is “Cruisin’ for a Cure.” The event will be held June 13-14 at the St. Clairsville Athletic Field.
We commend and congratulate the Belmont County Relay for Life for its is passionate work and recognition garnered along the way. We encourage all those who can to participate in whatever fashion possible in making “Cruisin’ for a Cure” another record-breaking endeavor.
