Indoor Treasures

SUMMER FUN is usually associated with the outdoors.

Swimming, biking, camping and athletic fields yield much of the hot-weather entertainment.

However, much can be said for indoor entertainment. Case in point: The Belmont County District Library.

It is participating in the nationwide summer reading program “Fizz, Boom, Read!,” starting on June 10. Many of the programs are structured around scientific exploration for children.

Participants will be treated in style. The children will receive a participation bag filled with free magazines, trading cards, coloring pages and other fun items.

That is just the beginning.

The youngsters will be guests to a wide variety of entertaining programs.

Some of the special events at the Martins Ferry Library will include visits from Ronald McDonald and “The Bugman,” in addition to the annual worm race as well as science and storyteller programs.

Libraries always offer books that are free to borrow, so patrons of any age can learn or read for fun about any subject. Summer reading puts special emphasis on that fact, so that minds stay sharp while school is out of session.

The activities are not limited to the Martins Ferry Library. Powhatan Point, Bethesda, Shadyside, Flushing and Bridgeport are other district libraries featuring numerous fun-filled programs.

All programs are free. To learn more about any of the libraries’ summer programs, visit mfpl.org or stop in at one of the six local branches.

St. Clairsville and Bellaire are not county branches. That doesn’t mean they don’t each have their own quality summertime offerings. Both boast a bevy of programs.

We encourage youths across Eastern Ohio to visit their local libraries this summer. They will be served up plenty of good times and knowledge.
