Cheers & Jeers
CHEERS to Senior Services of Belmont County for providing meals to some 900 homes throughout the county. Many elderly and disabled residents rely on the agency for their daily nutrition, so it is a critical service for our region.
CHEERS to the St. Clairsville American Legion baseball team for its fine showing in the Beast of the East Tournament.
CHEERS to Belmont County’s Land Reutilization Corp. program for enabling more dilapidated houses to be razed in Martins Ferry. Not only does the program help to reduce slum and blight, but it also makes properties available to adjacent landowners and generates additional money for continued demolition efforts.
CHEERS to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, for coming to Martins Ferry to discuss pension benefits with local coal mine retirees. He and other lawmakers from the local area have introduced legislation to help ensure the federal government keeps its promise made 40 years ago to keep the miners’ pension fund solvent.
JEERS to financial struggles that are forcing Bellaire leaders to choose which bills to pay first and which ones to place on the back burner.
CHEERS to Martins Ferry police and other law enforcement who helped in the search for a man who escaped from the East Ohio Correctional Center in Wintersville on Wednesday. The man, Gregory D. Lekanudos, was apprehended less than 24 hours after he walked away from the minimum security facility in Wintersville.Cheers & Jeers
