Gas Land

Dear Editor,

I agree with Mr. Ricchetti concerning the frenzy with the looming gas and oil drilling plans. While I have not seen the documentary, “Gas Land USA”.

I am concerned with the parallels with the gas companies and the coal companies.

In particular, I speak of the strip mine fiascos and what that procedure has done to the population and ecology of Belmont County.

For example, I speak of western Belmont County. While the jobs were welcomed and prospects rosy, after the coal companies departed, there was nothing but ruined farmland and vacant small towns.

Recovery, though minimal, has taken decades.

One does not get something for nothing.

The money rolling in with the leasing wave in particular.

What will be required to give back?

Could it be our lovely land, our wildlife, or our own lives?
