It never stops amazing me how smart our founding fathers were when they were setting up our government. Just a few quotes I found to be interesting:

From that moment on, the majority always votes for candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship,” Alexander Tyler 1787.
3. “I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them,” Thomas Jefferson.
