Gifts for Yanks
Members of the American Legion Post 521 of Shadyside have joined hundreds of other American Legion Posts to help make this year memorable for hospitalized Veterans. We are doing it by collecting funds for the annual American Legions of Ohio “Gifts for The Yanks That Gave” Program. All Shadyside businesses will be approached on March 7 and 8, and asked for donations.
Volunteers from Post 521 will be collecting in Shadyside on March 16. They will be collecting at The Party Center, The IGA, Convenient Food Mart, The Dairy Bar and Wes Banco. These volunteers will be soliciting funds from the public for our veterans.
This is the 66th consecutive year the Ohio American Legion is pooling funds from Posts for gifts and activities benefiting veterans in Ohio VA Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics and Ohio Veteran’s Homes in Sandusky and Georgetown. The program’s name is the same as the one initiated by comedian Eddie Cantor in 1943.
“This effort is not limited to members of the Legion,” stated Post Commander Steve Ishmael. “We welcome contributions from individuals and business establishments to help finance the state-wide program annually costing near $400,000. Checks may be made payable to “Gifts for Yanks” and sent to the local Chairman, James McCulley, at: Shadyside American Legion, 3809 Central Ave., Shadyside, OH 43947.
In addition to distributing individuals gifts to Veterans patients, the Ohio Legion is also contributing to each of the five Gift shops operated at the VA Hospitals, whereby patients may select gifts to send to their families and nearly $20,000 for the purchase of canteen books for VA patients.
