On behalf of the Ohio Valley Breastfeeding Coalition, we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making our celebration of breastfeeding families a success. On Aug. 3,we celebrated “World Breastfeeding Week” with our annual Breastfeeding Awareness Walk at the Ohio Valley Mall. Over 100 walkers participated in the event. The walk has been held at the mall for the past 15 years. Their staff has done an outstanding job in helping with the preparations for the event. Registation started at 11 a.m. and the walk began at noon. Coalition members set up educational displays and offered breastfeeding brochures and give-a-ways. A drawing for door prizes was held as well as a 50/50 drawing. There were children’s activities which included face painting, temporary tattoos, and the WII Dance Dimension area. We would also like to thank Riesbeck’s for donating the delicious/beautifully decorated cake which was served after the walk. Dawes has provided the helium for the balloons for the past several years and Game Stop set up the TV and WII system. Bottles of water were donated by South Central Power Co. We want to thank OVMC and EORH for their ongoing support in all our activities.
This year’s theme “Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers” addresses how the day-to-day support for the breastfeeding mother can influence the mother’s decision to have a positive breastfeeding experience and it can be provided in a variety of ways. The circles of support surrounding the mother include her Family and Social Network, Healthcare Providers, Workplace, Government/Legislation and Response to Crisis or Emergency.
The Coalition recognized five employers/caregivers/ teachers this year who were nominated for their outstanding support of a breastfeeding mom. Natalie Hawthorne nominated Cat Connors president of Friends of the St Clairsville Library; Colleen Kennedy and Brittany Brown nominated the Martins Ferry McDonald’s; Cherie Wise nominated Cynthia Stanley; Linda Mehl nominated Dr Craig Bentley; Christina Stillwell nominated Michele Grant. They were presented with a plaque as a thank you of their outstanding support.
The OVBC was formed in 1996 to promote breastfeeding and to provide consistent, high quality educational support of breastfeeding in the Ohio Valley area. Educational support is directed to breastfeeding mothers and their infants as well as to healthcare professionals who provide care to these mothers.
Not only do we want to thank the Coalition members and sponsors of the event, but most importantly, the families who attended the walk to show their support of breastfeeding in the Ohio Valley.
