Fair board looks ahead
THE BELMONT County Tourism Council made a donation of $70,000 this week to the Belmont County Fair Board for the construction of the first barn at the new fairgrounds, which will be the venue for the annual fair beginning in 2010. From left are the tourism council’s John Rataiczak, Executive Director Eugene “Doc” Householder, Al Molnar and Floyd Simpson, presenting the oversized check to the fair board’s President Jerry Campbell and fellow directors Shirley Shoemaker, Malissa Campbell, Leroy Carpenter and Debi Ault. ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The 159th Belmont County Fair will come to a close today, and fair board members are looking ahead to one more fair at the old site before the annual event makes its debut at the new location in 2010.
Next September the fair will be held for the last time at the current Belmont County Fairgrounds in the city of St. Clairsville, which now owns the site. Preparations continue to relocate the fair to the new site west of St. Clairsville off Roscoe Road.

Political stops do the trick
Thu, September 4, 2008 @ 8:36AM
The Ohio Valley has been fortunate enough to have Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Bill Clinton all make stops in the valley during this election season. With the Clinton’s out of the picture for now, Obama making a stop to rural Jefferson County is not a usual stop for the Democratic Presidential hopeful. Torn between the Democrats and the Republicans, I believe candidates that visit the Ohio Valley are more likely to be voted for than non-visitors to the valley. Call it what you will, but I don’t believe people follow the issues very well. I believe we as the media showcase the candidates’ baggage and do not always take a closer look at what is important.

Coal Classic
Wed, August 27, 2008 @ 7:13PM
The Friends of Coal Classic takes root this holiday weekend in Wheeling. Never has so much prep football talent been in an Ohio Valley stadium on the same day. The three-game classic features some of the premier teams in the country. When you can bring a high school heavyweight from Florida, you definitely have a major event. The Friends of Coal Classic offers Ohio Valley grid fans an opportunity never before seen in the area and maybe never again. Labor Day should be a landmark day in prep athletic annals.

My favorite "going green" trend
Thu, August 28, 2008 @ 9:32AM
I'll admit that I'm sort of sick of hearing about "going green" because you hear about it every time you turn around; however, I've got to say that I'm actually quite impressed how well the Valley has adapted. I thought for sure it'd be another couple of years before the hype of "environmentally friendly" kicked in around here, but I was wrong. I took a trip out to the Ohio Valley Mall last weekend and noticed there were not just trash cans to throw your waste in, but also, a separate bin for bottles and a separate bin for cans - placed all over the mall! My favorite newest going green trend is definitely the cloth grocery bags, though. It's amazing how much those little bags can hold compared to plastic.

Hunting Season is Near
Sun, August 24, 2008 @ 7:19AM
Well, football season is here and that means hunting season is not far behind. Monday, Sept. 1 is the opening day for squirrel, mourning dove and Canada goose. The ODNR is forecasting great seasons for dove and goose hunters and an above average season for squirrels. One change for you internet rednecks is the online flip-book of Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations that allows for easier viewing, browsing, and zooming of the rules. Another change this season is that Ohio issues an apprentice-hunting license. The apprentice license was developed as part of a nation-wide effort called "Families Afield." Families Afield projects are designed to remove barriers that prevent hunters from passing along the hunting heritage.

Sorting Out
Fri, September 5, 2008 @ 10:33AM
The prep football season enters its third weekend this evening around the Ohio Valley and some things are starting to become really clear. Steubenville and Wheeling Central are still really good and after that it's pretty much a crap shoot. The Ohio Valley seems pretty balanced. You've got St. Clairsville, Union Local, Harrison Central, Shadyside, Beallsville, Bridgeport all off to strong starts. Martins Ferry continues to be an enigma. The Purple Riders looked mighty strong in their scrimmages, but dropped their opener to Buckeye Local and then failed to score in the second half, but held on to beat Edison last week. The Riders have as much talent as anyone, but they are adopting a new offensive approach and seemingly haven't fully worked out all of the kinks, but something tells me the Riders are going to explode one week and it could be on for them at that point. Jordan Barbina of Union Local has put some astronomical numbers through the first two weeks of the season.
