Gym memberships growing among children

Should it be any surprise the largest demographic purchasing a gym membership are young children, according to a recent Associated Press article I read on the web? Let's face the facts. Obesity is killing people at young ages and sitting back behind the Nintendo, like many did in my early years, is not cutting the slack. Kids are hitting summer football camps within the next three weeks and many of them are not going to be ready. When I say not ready I do not mean strong enough, but healthy enough to keep up. There were a number of kids on my junior high football team last season that were winded after one lap around the field. You would have thought I had them running a half marathon with all the disgust and anguish on their faces. Well, they chose not to workout over the summer and sit behind a Nintendo Wii or some other video game system, being inactive. And yes.

Summer of Bummer?

Between the Indians, Pirates and Reds, you'd think at least one of our regional favorites would be playing respectable baseball. Cleveland is easily the most disappointing of the trio. The defending A.L. Central champs have yet to hit their stride and have failed to generate anything resembling consistency. This past weekend's series against the perennial patsy Royals is an excellent example. The Tribe and C.C. Sabathia led late in Saturday's game only to cough up a late 2-0 lead and eventually fall. Sunday, they again wasted excellent pitching and were blanked, 2-0. I've said it before: I don't put much stock in the standings until Memorial Day, but Cleveland obviously needs jump-started. Hopefully, sooner than later. While there's every reason to believe the Indians will recover and enjoy another contending season, no such optimism to resport from the Pirates and Reds' camp. It truly appears these two train wrecks will battle for the N.L. cellar.

In last Sunday's paper, a story brought tears to my eyes, and it's not often this happens. I sat down on my day off and picked up the paper, my eyes doing a double take on this beautiful artwork that made front page. I began to look more closely and realized this was not just a story on paintings - it was a story about living life to the fullest. When I read about Mr. Brad Drake, I was taken aback. After an accident in 1977 that left him quadriplegic, he remained so unbelievably positive by painting and drawing pictures with a paint brush or a colored pencil between his mouth. Now his artwork will be included in the Barnesville Bicentennial art show in July. That's remarkable, and Barnesville is lucky to have such a contributing citizen. I wanted to write about this because it was such an inspiring story, but in all honesty, there are no words.

4th of July Baseball

Our proud nation is about to celebrate yet another birthday this week. And while Americans still struggle with gasoline prices and rising costs of basically everything except the double cheeseburger at McDonald's, which is still a tremendous buy for a dollar, there is a steady thing in our culture. The American Past Time. America's Game. You know it as baseball. Whether it's sandlot, American Legion, adult leagues or even Major Leagues, it's still baseball. A game that can unify everyone because everyone enjoys baseball. Whether it's to just go to the ball park and spend an evening, you've got to enjoy it enough to do that. Some go to the park and hinge on every pitch and other go for the promotion. The gist of what I am saying is people go to baseball games regardless of their reason. Major League Baseball is relaxing, entertaining and above all just plain old enjoyable.
