Teachers charged with sexual misconduct

It is a sad day when you open your daily paper, or look at your daily source of news on the internet to see another teacher getting charged with some form of sexual misconduct. Today alone, I found three published articles – from Ohio, Pennsylvania and Illinois – about teachers who were charged for having inappropriate relationships with children. These three incidents involved junior high and high school students.

Coal Classic

The Friends of Coal Classic takes root this holiday weekend in Wheeling. Never has so much prep football talent been in an Ohio Valley stadium on the same day. The three-game classic features some of the premier teams in the country. When you can bring a high school heavyweight from Florida, you definitely have a major event. The Friends of Coal Classic offers Ohio Valley grid fans an opportunity never before seen in the area and maybe never again. Labor Day should be a landmark day in prep athletic annals.

My favorite "going green" trend

I'll admit that I'm sort of sick of hearing about "going green" because you hear about it every time you turn around; however, I've got to say that I'm actually quite impressed how well the Valley has adapted. I thought for sure it'd be another couple of years before the hype of "environmentally friendly" kicked in around here, but I was wrong. I took a trip out to the Ohio Valley Mall last weekend and noticed there were not just trash cans to throw your waste in, but also, a separate bin for bottles and a separate bin for cans - placed all over the mall! My favorite newest going green trend is definitely the cloth grocery bags, though. It's amazing how much those little bags can hold compared to plastic.

Hunting Season is Near

Well, football season is here and that means hunting season is not far behind. Monday, Sept. 1 is the opening day for squirrel, mourning dove and Canada goose. The ODNR is forecasting great seasons for dove and goose hunters and an above average season for squirrels. One change for you internet rednecks is the online flip-book of Ohio Hunting and Trapping Regulations that allows for easier viewing, browsing, and zooming of the rules. Another change this season is that Ohio issues an apprentice-hunting license. The apprentice license was developed as part of a nation-wide effort called "Families Afield." Families Afield projects are designed to remove barriers that prevent hunters from passing along the hunting heritage.

It's almost here. What captivates the entire Ohio Valley for 10 straight weeks better than high school football? I know the answer to that question...nothing does. The high school football season is huge all over the state of Ohio, but it's got a special place in the heart of communities in the Ohio Valley. It all gets under way Thursday when a pair of games unfold locally. Hard to believe that pigskins will be flying for real in just about 48 hours. Time for the preparation to come to an end, the trash talking to cease and strap it up for real. It's just unreal because it seemed like only last week that the St. John Central girls were claiming their second straight Division III state track championship. But, summer might be the one time of the year, which seems like it goes faster than prep football season. Stick with The Times Leader all season for all of your football hungers. Whether it's preps, Ohio State or the pros, we've got you all covered.
