With 2008 nearly evaporated, it is commonplace to look back at the top stories of the year. The presidential campaign and the subsequent historic election of Barack Obama obviously draws heavy consideration. But of greater consequence all year long was the failing economy as its struggles were felt locally and nationally. The nation was -- and possibly still remains -- on the brink of a depression. These are the toughest of times, and the Ohio Valley has been hit right between the eyes with all the economic problems. The steel industry is on life support, businesses have been shutting their respective doors with all too much frequency and all the Eastern Ohio counties are struggling with their budgets. Having said that, hopefully with Obama running the show for 11 months we will be whistling a different tune entering 2010.

"A long December and there's reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last..." -Counting Crows Since I've already had the opportunity to reveal my "Top 10 Best Moments of 2008" in the Scene, which will be out, as always, the first Friday of the month, I've decided to blog about my "Top 10 Worst Moments of 2008." Yep, that's me, Miss Negativity. Here goes... 10. The time I tried detox dieting. And by detox dieting, I mean drinking lemon water with cayenne pepper for breakfast, lunch and dinner for one week. OK, I'll admit, I definitely DIDN'T last a week on that crap, but take my word - don't ever try it. 9. The week I got two flat tires and backed into my friend's car - all in the span of five days ... then having to dish out over $400 for those mishaps.

Big Ten Pride

It is a tough season to be a Big Ten football fan. We are just 1-5, with one game to go as the Ohio State Buckeyes take on the - We have a chip on our shoulder - Texas Longhorns. After being snubbed for the national championship game, the Longhorns have a chance to earn a share of the national championship with, maybe Utah (?) by laying a whoopin' on our Scarlet and Grey. It's not like anybody really expected much of the Big Ten in this year's bowl games. Iowa's 31-10 win over South Carolina is about the only thing the conference has to be proud of in this holiday's football extravaganza. Northwestern has nothing to be ashamed of, their game against Missouri was a good game, one of the few battles in a bowl season of blow outs (Florida State 42, Wisconsin 13). Maybe the fans from Happy Valley can look down their noses at the Buckeye fans after Penn State put together a good second half against USC and only lost 38-24 to the mighty Trojans.

Halftime in the Desert

It appeared as if Texas was going to take the lead into the lockerroom at halftime, but once again the Buckeyes' defense made a play when it was most needed. Colt McCoy had been lights out in the first half, completing 20-of-26 passes for 198 yards, but his 27th attempt was one of the biggest plays of the football games thus far. OSU defensive back Anderson Russell stepped in front of Jordan Shipley and picked off the pass at the 1-yard line with inside of 5 seconds to go before the half. Earlier in the half, Ohio State was the beneficiary of a Texas penalty, which pushed back a drive and resulted in the lone Texas points a 27-yard field goal. Another drive ended when Thaddeus Gibson recorded a sack of McCoy, the defense's second of the game. It's been low scoring, but definitely entertaining thus far. In case you were watching talking heads at halftime analyse this game, TBDBITL just put on heck of a performance.
