THE OHIO State University may come out smelling like a rose after the dust settles on the Jim Tressel meltdown. Tressel proved he is -- or was -- a great college football coach. But the Buckeyes have the opportunity to improve on the situation. Luke Fickell will run the Scarlet & Gray store for one year. He will not get the long-term job. There are too many blue-chip coaches knocking at the door. Urban Meyer is the slam-dunk fit to take over in 2012. He is a Buckeye native. He has instant credibility, winning big at Bowling Green and Utah before leading Florida to a pair of national championships. He is also available after retiring for health and family reasons. It is only a matter of time before Urban returns to the sidelines. The time will likely come in a year for one of his dream jobs, Notre Dame as another. I hope E. Gordon Gee and Gene Smith, if both are still around, realize that Meyer is an upgrade to Tressel. They can do a national search but the best fit hails from Ashtabula. While the NCAA may be harsh on the Buckeyes -- as well it should -- the Buckeyes will weather the storm with the right pilot. Urban renewal is needed in BuckeyeLand.
