July 12, 2011 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
Finally, some good Ohio State football news. Interim head coach Luke Fickell made a superb hire by adding Mike Vrabel to the Scarlet & Gray grid staff. Vrabel will coach linebackers, an opening created when Fickell became the head man. Vrabel brings instant credibility to a program in desperate need of it. He is a former Ohio State star, a two-time Big Ten defensive player of the year. Vrabel went on to a sparkling 14-year NFL career for three teams -- Steelers, Patriots and Chiefs. Along the way he picked up three Super Bowl rings and earned a reputation for being very cerebral and character rich. Both qualities will help a sagging Buckeye program. His hiring cannot have come at a better time as the Buckeyes lost another prize recruit to the "Team Up North." Vrabel is not worried he could be one and done as an OSU assistant. Fickell's fate is uncertain. Both Fickell and Vrabel have enough revenue built up as quality coaches that Urban Meyer (my guess as the 2012 OSU head coach) will retain both. Vrabel's hiring is not a cure all but it may provide the impetus to regain Buckeye football momentum.
