Friday Night Lights
July 15, 2011 - Kim Collette
Texas Forever....Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose.....Tonight will be the last time we hear those words spoken on Friday Night Lights (FNL). The television series will air it's extended series finale this evening.
Although never a huge ratings winner, FNL used a brilliantly written football show to give us a look at small town America. The show touched on race, class, religion and much more. It was a show about relationships and emotions. Connor Schell, the vice president and executive producer of ESPN Films and ESPN Classic describes the show perfectly. "At its core, Friday Night Lights captures the blend of drama, excitement, and heartache that embodies what it means to be a sports fan."
As with all series finales, there is a certain expectation that viewers have that is rarely met (aka as the "Seinfeld"). I would hope that FNL stays true to itself and delivers a show that we are used to getting....wonderfully acted, great story, and with tons of emotion. As a fan, I hope that the lose ends are tied up so we aren't kept guessing about what happens (aka the "Sopranos").
So tonight I will be invested in Dillon Texas. Will Coach Taylor's squad the East Dillon Panthers win state? Will Tami get to accept her dream job? Will Tim Riggins find himself again? Will Julie and Matt end up back together? Will Coach stay to coach the super squad?
ESPN is ensuring this critically acclaimed show lives on after tonight's finale on NBC. ESPN Classic will begin showing FNL starting on July 21. The bottom line is this is a great show whether you are a football fan or not. So for those of us bidding adieu to Dillom, Texas......Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose....Texas Forever.
Until next time friends!
