Shake, rattle and roll!

August 24, 2011 - Taste Buds
There was a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on yesterday afternoon at the Times Leader. No, that shaking was not the Buds’ bellies grumbling. It was actually an earthquake!

Picture a normal day in the newsroom (imagine those Sportscenter commercials where the mascots are sending faxes and football players dressed in full uniform are using the copier—that’s EXACTLY what life in our newsroom is like!) . The Buds were hard at work when suddenly our desks started shaking. Each Bud blamed her desk-mate for the shaking, but when it went on for a while, we figured something was amiss.

Bud Shaunna looked up and noticed the pictures on the wall rocking back and forth. Bud Em looked at Bud Shaunna with wide eyes and asked, “What is that?” Nobody in the newsroom wanted to say the “E” word. One coworker comically suggested the shaking was the result of the Superload. Maybe that’s one spectacularly large piece of equipment, but it certainly didn’t have that much energy to cause the entire building to shake, rattle and roll! Another savvy coworker turned on the national news and that’s when we heard reports of the East Coast earthquake. An earthquake in the Ohio Valley? Craziness!

The funny thing was, while the building shook, everyone in the newsroom stood frozen in place, unsure of what to do. What a strange feeling that was. We couldn’t even imagine what it must have felt like at the center, or how an even stronger earthquake would have felt. On the earthquake scale, this was very minor shaking—many people in the area didn’t even feel it. It was the Buds’ first earthquake, and hopefully it was our last!!

The Buds want to know . . . did you feel the earthquake? Where were you when you felt it and what was your first reaction? We’re looking forward to your comments!
