Lot on the line
September 6, 2011 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
It may be a matchup of small schools but it carries big ramifications. Bishop Donahue and Beallsville lock horns Saturday night in Moundsville. While it is only Week 3, the outcome will impact the OVAC Class A championship race. The Bishops are coming off a sparkling season, one which saw them lose a truckload of talent. BD, however, hasn't skipped a beat this season, blasting Cameron and Clay-Battelle in getting off to a 2-0 start. Beallsville, meanwhile, opened impressively by routing Conotton Valley. The Blue Devils found the going much tougher in Week Two, losing a road encounter against a quality Strasburg outfit. The Bishops soundly defeated a banged-up Blue Devil squad last season. Saturday's winner will join Madonna as favorites to claim the OVAC championship. The Blue Dons will also have their hands full with Wheeling Central this weekend. While Bishop Donahue is experiencing the best of grid times, Beallsville appears ready to return to days of glory. They boast experience and firepower. I believe Beallsville is poised for a big season. Unless the Blue Devils are plagued by turnovers or bad breaks, I can see a two-TD triumph for Coach Dave Caldwell's charges Saturday. SPEAKING of Madonna and Wheeling Central, the Maroon Knights may be one of the biggest surprises of the young campaign. Coach Mike Young's reigning state champions were ravaged by graduation and defections which left many Central partisans expecting a rebuilding season. Not so fast. The Knights are 2-0 after disposing of two quality Buckeye 8 teams, Bellaire and Edison, both on the road. The Blue Dons, state champions from two years ago, are 2-0 with wins over Valley and Steubenville Central. The Blue Dons have a loaded sophomore class which should only get better and better as the season progresses. I like the Maroon this weekend but I expect a rematch in the postseason, which may have a different outcome.
