Why we love autumn

September 23, 2011 - Taste Buds
Buh-bye, summer. Hello, autumn!

Yes friends, time to put the flip-flops away and dig out your favorite pair of boots. Cooler weather and shorter days are visible on the horizon, and before you know it, we'll all be singing Christmas carols!

But autumn isn't a time to be depressed about the long-gone days of summer. Most people say autumn is their favorite time of year. The Buds can think of a list of things that they love about autumn:

• Leaves. With the wet weather this spring and summer, we are looking forward to a very colorful landscape in the valley. According to, our peak color will take place sometime in mid to late-October. What could have been more fun as a kid than raking up a pile of crunchy, fragrant leaves and then jumping into it and tossing the leaves up in the air? Nothing—except maybe making mud pies or playing in the dirt.

• Fall decorations. Call us cutesy, but we love scarecrows and pumpkins and cornstalks. And all you allergy sufferers, feel free to dig out your hay bales and decorate your outdoors with the best of them—allergy season typically ends during the fall.

• Halloween. You don't have to be a kid to enjoy this popular holiday. Plenty of adults, including the Buds, still dress in our finest costumes and head out to a Halloween party. Pumpkin carving is a fun activity—if you've never tried it, you really don't know what you're missing. Bud Shaunna and a friend have volunteered a few times at the Good Zoo to help them carve pumpkins. One year, Bud Shaunna's friend wanted to carve a pumpkin with Bea Arthur's likeness, only to discover that it was a bit too complex for a beginner. So instead she carved the state of West Virginia. See, the possibilities are endless!

• Sports, sports and more sports. The summer lull is over and sports are back in full swing. High school, college, professional—they are certainly keeping the T-L sports department busy! Football, basketball and hockey have just started or will start soon, and baseball is winding down with the most exciting time—pennant races, playoffs and the World Series. There's bound to be an interesting sport to pique just about everyone's interest.

And we didn't even mention apple season and yummy apple pies....mmm....

With all this great stuff ahead of us this fall, who's gonna miss summer? Definitely not the Buds!
