Division I Semifinal #1
March 14, 2008 - Seth Staskey
The Lakewood St. Edward Eagles and Cincinnati St. Xavier Bombers are currently on the floor battling in the first Division I semifinal.
St. X owns a 17-9 lead. Walt Gibbler -- St. X's all-Ohioan -- is on fire thus far, scoring 10 points in the first six minutes of the contest.
Thus far, Indiana signee Tom Pritchard has been limited to one field goal for St. Edward.
The Bombers now lead 17-11 after one period. Lets keep in mind folks that the Bombers play in the Greater Catholic League and you'd better be a man if you want to play night in and night out in that league and expect to fare well.
In case you are interested, the St. X student body is one of the best I've ever seen. They just went row by row and stood up and did a chant through about 30 rows of students between the first and second quarters. Again, let's point out just how far behind the local student bodies are in this regard.
Well as the students continue to get on each other, the Bombers continued to show why the GCL is arguably the finest prep conference in the state. The The Bombers maintain a 35-25 lead at the intermission and Gibler leads the way with 14 points despite being in foul trouble. Pritchard is pacing the Eagles with 11 points.
The Eagles have stormed back in the first five minutes of the third quarter and taken their first lead of the contest at 40-39. Pritchard, Frankie Dobbs and unheralded senior Conor Tilow have been doing work. Pritchard just completed a three-point play to put St. Ed's on top.
Heading to the fourth and final period of play, St. Edward holds a 43-42 lead.
Well, there is less than two minutes to go and St. Eds continues to pull away. Pritchard just got a break-away dunk and Dobbs cashed a pair of foul shots as the Eagles have now built a 59-51 lead with 1:10 to play. Pritchard's got 26 points. Gibler has 24 for the Bombers.
St. Edward can make plans for Saturday night. The Eagles are up 10, 63-53, with less than 30 seconds to go and they are the line shooting a pair.
Well, it's gone final at Value City and it's Lakewood St. Edward 68-59.
