It's about time

November 9, 2011 - Taste Buds
Daylight Saving Time, that is.

This past weekend, our last sprig of summertime died when we turned the clocks back one hour to end Daylight Saving Time. To pretty much everyone, that means pitch dark skies on the way home from work. On the other hand, it also means actual light in the early morning, when the Buds are on their way to work. Getting out of bed sure was difficult when it still looked like it was midnight at 6:30 a.m. At least some light cracking through the blinds in the morning is helpful!

And then there's the bonus: an extra hour to do whatever. Unfortunately, that extra hour comes in the wee hours of the morning, but to Saturday night party animals and bar flies, that extra hour can be fun. But what did the Buds do with their extra hour? Bud Em: "Uh, I was sleeping." Bud Shaunna: "Um, yeah, me too." In fact, both Buds were WELL into dreamland by the time the time change occurred.

This extra hour of sleep isn't always a great idea, though. For instance, Bud Shaunna's dog does not know what Daylight Saving Time is, so when said dog jumped on top of Bud Shaunna's head at 6:30 a.m., the dog figured it was time for breakfast. Didn't she know that it was an hour too early to eat! Crazy dog...someone get her a watch. Or a smart phone.

And then there is the issue with the sun going down earlier. In fact, if you think it gets dark early now, wait for another month--the days are just getting shorter and shorter. Depressing, we know, but early darkness means people have more time to display their holiday light displays. The Buds love twinkling lights!

Before we all know it, Christmas will be here, followed by the New Year and Presidents' Day. By then it will be time to turn the clocks ahead one hour. And then everyone will complain about losing an hour. Maybe we should just do away with Daylight Saving Time all together and just keep the same time year round. That way, nobody has to worry about messing up his or her internal clock.

Although, the Buds REALLY enjoyed that extra hour of sleep....
