The sounds of Christmas

December 22, 2011 - Taste Buds
"Feel the love of Christmas!" the boys in the newsroom croon.

Yes, we are ALL feeling the love of Christmas, especially if you're talking about the music. And unless you've been stuck at home for the last month, you've been exposed to quite an array of Christmas tunes.

The Buds have heard just about everything--rock, country, jazz and classical versions of all our favorites. This is all well and good except when these songs get stuck in our heads, and then we are all feeling "the love of Christmas" over and over and over. Take Feliz Navidad for example. A favorite for many and very catchy (and overplayed)--so catchy that just the mere mention of the song has it ringing inside your head for at least the next hour. The Buds sometimes like to just blurt out random lyrics to this or any song at any moment's notice. They love us when we do this!

We've also heard some interesting remakes. Just yesterday, Bud Shaunna was shopping in a local store and heard a version of "Last Christmas" by some young-sounding teeny bopper. We're sorry, but lyrics like, "Last Christmas, I gave you my heart, but the very next day you gave it away," are extremely cheesy. In fact, there's also a lyric in the song that goes "Once bitten and twice shyed." Oh, come on! The Buds say you can't sing that if you're under the age of 13. We actually don't know many 18 year olds with such experience, either. So if you're planning to remake a Christmas song, at least sing one that's age appropriate.

Finally, we have the annoying songs. Yes, yes, we know these songs are supposed to make you happy and cheerful--and they do--but there are a few that are like fingernails down a chalkboard. Bud Em loathes the song, "Santa, Baby." Bud Shaunna is not too fond of it, either. We've both heard it a lot this season. The worst rendition of the song, according to Bud Em is the one done by Cyndi Lauper. It doesn't help that she sounds a little like Elmer Fudd...(normally we love the wild 80s rocker!). Bud Shaunna really dislikes the song "Wonderful Christmas Time." The message of the song isn't all that bad, but the hook in the chorus ("Simply having a wonderful Christmas time") just nags to the core. It's one of those that gets stuck in your head, and its worse when you don't like the song! Another horrible rendition of a Christmas song according to the Buds? Bruce Springsteen grinding out "Santa Claus is Coming to Town." You know the one. Ugh. And ouch, our ears.

So there you have it. Our thoughts on Christmas songs. Maybe now we can all "Feel the love of Christmas!"
