It's OVAC Championship Time
January 13, 2012 - Michael Palmer
While the weather is just beginning to turn to a winter cold and snow mix, the OVAC calender is signaling the end of the winter sports season.
The Wrestling Seeding Meeting is this Sunday at WesBanco Arena and Monday is the entry deadline for the OVAC Swim Meet.
The Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament is next weekend. This is a huge event with a floor full of wrestling action lasting from the opening ceremonies on Thursday to the championships on Saturday evening.
This is truly a great weekend for the Ohio Valley and offers high school wrestlers a great experience and an opportunity to wrestle in an environment similar to the state tournament is scale.
There is no break following the wrestling championships as the next weekend is the OVAC swimming championships at Steubenville High School. There is not a lot of seating for this one and parents or fans of swimmers spend the day in a near sauna condition to cheer on their teams.
It is an excuse to wear shorts in January for photographers. Please no flash photography, the legs are still a little white.
February 4 is the OVAC cheering championships. Do not dismiss this event, because it is the biggest draw for OVAC tournaments and local florists have to anticipate the extra sales of flowers for cheerleaders or they will not have any left for Valentines Day.
Wednesday Feb. 8 wrestling is back at the WesBanco for the OVAC Dual Meet Championship and it is media day for the OVAC girls hoops championships.
OVAC Girls Basketball Championships are Saturday the 11th at OUE and the following weekend the Boys take the court for the OVAC crown and the girls begin sectional tournaments.
The Monday the 20 softball and baseball schedules are turned in and we begin the boys sectional tournament schedule.
As you can tell, we will be very busy over the next month, but it is great fun to cover the local teams in these final weeks.
Hope to see a large crowd at the events and of course we always hope the weather is non-typical and we have dry roads for the OVAC Championships.
