Wouldn't you know it?

April 23, 2012 - Seth Staskey
After having beautiful weather basically all of March and early in April, it's only fitting that the time when the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference is set to begin crowning its spring sports champions, the weather resembles that of late February.

The OVAC tennis tournament was slated to begin on Monday at West Liberty University, the baseball tournament had already been pushed back to begin on Monday after Saturday's scheduled semifinals were washed out. The softball tournament begins on Tuesday.

And, wouldn't you know it, the weather is cold, damp and heck, there are even forecasts out there calling for a small accumulation of SNOW. Yes, snow and it's the last full week of April.

While the tennis tournament runs all week and can be moved to the inside playing facility at Wheeling Park, the baseball title games are set to begin with two on Friday and three on Saturday. All five softball title games are set for Saturday in Elm Grove. Keep in mind, that if the weather happens to not cooperate all week, then the top seeds will automatically advance to the finals. No, I didn't make that up. It's a legitimate rule. The OVAC can't control the weather despite several attempts (just kidding).

The OVAC track meet begins in one week at St. Clairsville and it will put the finishing touches on the OVAC calendar year of championships on Saturday, May 5 at Red Devil Stadium.

It's going to be a busy, but fun few weeks for local athletes, coaches, OVAC officials and the media. We just hope that Mother Nature cooperates. She was so nice to us during basketball and the early part of the spring. Hopefully, she doesn't let us down now.

Good luck to all of the competitors and field crews. Please practice patience because it could be a highly challenging and stressful week.
