Buds enjoy the work of junior "Bud-in-Training"
May 30, 2012 - Taste Buds
That's what the Buds think of Martha Payne, a 9 year old Scottish grade schooler and school lunch "food critic." Tired of her paltry cafeteria lunches, Martha started taking daily photos and writing a blog called "NeverSeconds" about it.
Her dad, of course, helps her with the blog, but Martha rates all her school lunches based on food-o-meter (overall taste), mouthfuls (or portion size), health, courses and pieces of hair (yes, that is really a category -- thankfully with only one or two entries).
Not only does Martha post photos of her lunches -- which consist of a lot of open plate space -- but she also includes photos from other school lunches of friends around the globe, possibly in an effort to show how much better the other lunches are (not to mention, how much fuller the plates are as well).
One meal that Martha gave a 9/10 on the food-o-meter consisted of Shepherd's Pie and various sides. Said Martha, "Today's Shepherd's Pie was really nice. The mash on top was really creamy and the mince was in lovely gravy. I wonder where their meat comes from. The salad was lovely and crunchy. The cake looked really difficult to serve because the icing was so sticky. I saved my melon until last and it was a great way to end my lunch."
On the other hand, the school's vegetable spring rolls did not tickle her fancy. "I decided to try something new today and I chose the vegetable spring rolls from the menu. They came with sticky rice which was amazing because it stuck to itself but not to my fork. My soup today must be the best soup in the world. It was chicken noodle soup and the noodles melt in your mouth. My dad thought I was drinking coffee with my lunch but it was really chocolate milkshake. I don't think I will have spring rolls again but I will always have the soup!" She gave the meal a poor mark of 3/10 on the food-o-meter.
Think back to your school lunches. We all probably complained about the food. Of course, we didn't have blogs back then, but Martha's forward thinking has actually resulted in the school making the lunches a bit healthier. Her blog has over 700,000 views and as word spreads, her blog is growing in popularity.
The Buds just love Martha's moxie. We want to adopt her and make her an official "Junior Bud"!
