Rockets retain Fierbaugh

May 31, 2012 - Michael Palmer
Conotton Valley has a new girls' basketball coach and after voting to replace their boys' basketball coach has changed that decision and will retain Mike Fierbaugh.

Parents, athletes and fans packed the high school cafeteria Wednesday evening at a special Conotton Valley board meeting in support of rehiring boys basketball coach Mike Fierbaugh and girls basketball coach Craig Moore.

The board decided by a 3-2 vote, the same margin by which he was voted out, a supplemental contract was awarded to Fierbaugh as boys coach for the 2012-13 school year.

This seemed a logical reversal. With the revolving coaching door for Rocket sports it would not bode well to have it known that only at CV could you coach the first winning season in 12 plus years, get coach of the year in district 5, be a coach on the OVAC all star game and still get sacked by the BOE.

The girls coaching job did change hands going to Garaway and Ohio University standout 6-4 Center Chandra Myers.

Boasting an impressive resume: At OU she was a preseason All-MAC Selection. Played in and started 17 games her senior year before sitting out the last two months due to injury ... Finishes her Ohio career ranked seventh on the school's all-time blocks list ... Averaged 7.7 points and 5.1 rebounds in just under 26 minutes per game ... Shot .551 from the field, ranking second on the team in field goal percentage ... Scored in double figures six times in 17 games played.

Playing for the Pirates she was a two-time special mention All-Ohio selection ... Tabbed first-team all-conference and first-team All-District V ... Named District V Player of the Year ... Averaged 13.5 points and seven rebounds per game at Garaway High School ... Helped lead the squad to a sectional championship and district runner-up finish ... Also lettered in volleyball and track and field.

No offense intended to coach Moore, or coach Fierbaugh, but if I were on the school board I think I would have hired her as the boys basketball coach if she had applied.

This is a once in a century hire for a small school like CV. In my opinion, despite the quality job Moore has done turning around the lady Rockets program, “No way you pass up Myers.”

We all get to see the Rockets new head football coach run the Ohio squad in the OVAC All Star game and in week one they host Beallsville, week two travel to face St. John's Irish and in week 3 host Bridgeport. I might see two games next season officially covering for the TL in Leesville.

Word has it that Conotton needs a 10 mil plus levy just to keep the doors open and a 14.4 mil passed to afford a new building, so enjoy the fun while you can Rocket fans.
