Football player named Homecoming Queen

October 2, 2012 - Michael Palmer
If being named homecoming queen is a lifetime memory for a high school student, so, too, is kicking a few PATs for an unbeaten state ranked football team.

The sidelines were all a buzz Friday night in St. Clairsville as Haylee Skukan opened the white rose and won the Homecoming queen crown. The applause only grew louder as Haylee then went onto the field to kick the point after for the Red Devils next touchdown.

In the past, the homecoming queen had traditionally been crowned at halftime of the school’s football game. Never before, though, had she been wearing a football uniform complete with shoulder pads and been tardy from the from the team’s halftime meeting in the locker room. I am certain other high schools have had similar situations, but for my career as a sports photographer it was unique.

Not only has Haylee managed to make the varsity football team as a girl, she is accepted as a member by her fellow players and coaches. There was no animosity, just cheers, high fives and hugs from coaches and fellow players who were genuinely happy for this special young lady.

I am sure she looked much lovelier than any other member of the football team at the homecoming dance. I am hopeful she was also the only member of the football team who showed up for the dance in a dress.

On the sidelines she looked quite uncomfortable as the WTOV9 camera zoomed in for a close up of her as she stood on the sidelines with her teammates. I tried to lighten the moment by panning some “Hello Mom” and “We're #1” from behind the cameraman as I reminded her that the nice young man from Steubenville took moving pictures.

I enjoy being on the sidelines with the players and talking with them, truly we have some very fine future leaders lining the football fields of the Valley. This young lady is a standout in that group, deserving of the honor and I just wanted to highlight the event.

Hopefully she will get to take the field and kick a PAT for St. Clairsville in week 15, wouldn't that just be sweet icing on the cake?
