The Rhodes to Success
July 16, 2013 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
I AM rooting for Don Rhodes. The owner of Rhodes Florist in Brookside has recently embarked on a daunting project. Rhodes has purchased the Eagles building in downtown Bridgeport. I am certain it didn't come cheaply. Once the home to a beehive of activity, the building has sat dormant for many years. It is in the heart of town, doing nothing but aging. For decades, the Eagles had a bustling membership, headquartered on the first floor while the upstairs was home to countless social events, the foremost being wedding receptions. It was one of the most popular reception venues in the Ohio Valley. In that regard, those days may be returning to the building in the months to come. Rhodes is in the process of renovating his new purchase. He hopes to kick off the refurbished facility with his daughter's wedding reception in November. I know of no better way to christen a new building than your daughter's wedding. I hope that scenario comes to fruition. I am a big fan of shakers and movers and individuals not afraid to take a risk. Don Rhodes is obviously one of those type of people. His floral business does well, but he is willing to put his neck on the line for a project that has no guarantee. I, for one, think Rhodes' Eagles venture will take flight. The Ohio Valley is in need of nice reception halls. The first floor has limitless possibilities. My vote is for a dining option. You can never have too many lunch options. I will be shocked if the Bridgeport community does not fully embrace Rhodes' efforts. If successful, it will provide a major shot-in-the-arm to the downtown area. We need more Don Rhodes in Eastern Ohio.
