Get out and watch some high school hoops!
February 26, 2014 - Michael Palmer
The Division IV Girls' basketball tournament in New Philadelphia this year should provide some quality competition as four of the top ten teams in the state battle this Thursday evening.
Third ranked Zanesville Rosecrans will play No. 5 Conotton Valley. It is their second meeting this season, in the first the until then undefeated Rockets lost by 30 points, a sting they are anxious to avenge, could get interesting.
Second game of the evening is the Bulldogs of Bridgeport against the perennial powerhouse Hiland Hawks. It will be their first meeting but as a parent of daughters who played in the IVC against Hiland every year, I know that defeating the ladies from Berlin is a daunting task.
3. Zanesville Rosecrans (2) 19-1 143 4. Berlin Hiland (3) 18-4 135 5. Bowerston Conotton Valley 19-0 133 6. Bridgeport (3) 20-1 125
The same evening there is a double header in Steubenville where Harrison Central will take on the other half of the Homes County girls juggernaut, Garaway. In the opener on the river St. Clairsville will face off against Fort Frye, the number one seed.
Either venue would be a great road trip to watch some high school hoops. I will be in New Phila Thursday as a fan for the opener and as photographer for the night cap.
The boys' playoffs are in full swing also.
Crowds are usually small for these games, which is a shame.
I hope you can make it to one of the games.
