Cookoff judging - serious business
June 30, 2014 - Taste Buds
Bud Shaunna recently had the opportunity to act as an "official" judge for Wheeling's Rib and Chicken cookoff. Oh yes, this was serious business, as Bud S was given an official judge t-shirt and everything!
This was actually Bud Shaunna's first attempt at judging food outside of her weekly restaurant visits. She wasn't too thrilled about eating ribs, as those aren't really her favorite, but she figured she could suck it up for the sake of the people of the Ohio Valley. You're welcome.
After meeting with the group of judges, Bud S happily learned that judges were needed for chicken and ribs. And when asked if anyone had a preference, Bud S's hand shot up for chicken (perhaps one can blame Bud Em's influence for the Buds' overall fondness of poultry). Yay! She didn't have to eat ribs! Although at cookoff events, the food is fantastic, so Bud S was sure she would have gotten some good food even if it wasn't tops on her list of favorite things to eat.
Bud Shaunna felt like a legitimate judge, filling out scores on a clipboard and rating food based on appearance, tenderness, taste, texture and sauce flavor. And it might seem hard to believe, but each sample had a different, distinct flavor that was easy to distinguish. Some samples were sweeter, while others had a smokey flavor. She definitely had her thinking cap on, that's for sure!
These were all quite good. It was hard to choose. Oh, what the heck! Everyone's a winner in Bud S's taste buds!
The event proved a fun experience, and there were many vendors present at Heritage Port. Events like this are always great, and it's also a good place to run into old friends and make new ones. It's pretty likely Bud Shaunna and Bud Em will be at the next Heritage Port event (especially if it involves food), but this time we won't be there in any official capacity - we'll just be there to have fun!
