As another kid goes off to school

August 21, 2014 - Michael Palmer
The old saying about time flies is so true. We seldom take note that while we are living it, life is flying by us. My middle daughter is getting her dose of the sage's wisdom next week when the grandson goes to preschool. He is now 4 years old and will go full day to Harrison North in the early childhood development whatever, you know, the before Kindergarden thing.

It is hitting home with her that her full-time job as mom is becoming part-time, at least during the school year. Now the cruel truth of life is revealed, we grow too soon old.

I have photos of the kids first day of school. Little Tony going off to school and his sisters both crying because they had to stay home.

I stopped by last year for grand daughter Zoey's first day of school. Because she was in a different school district she avoided the whole pre-school package. It did not bother her, she was a smart student and did well in the school environment.

Xander, the grandson, well … he may not be a model student.

Smart, oh yeah, no problem there. Well behaved, perhaps at times and it depends on who you ask.

His being raised on the farm may have shorted him on what the city folks consider “good manners.” He makes a gun with his fingers and shoots things, sometimes other people, which may garner him a criminal record before he becomes an official kindergardener.

We also have a liberal bathroom policy in the country, simply put, bushes can and do suffice as a port-a-potty when playing outside in the country.

That has been worked on and hopefully next week he will make the extra effort to find a toilet. If not, I presume that the blame will rest squarely on my shoulders.

There is always the option of home schooling. That gives my daughter back her job – and I know she will excel as an educator. She has always had that knack, she took great care of her younger sister.

I will keep you updated on the newest adventure in learning.

For now, I will be heading to get some tissues for the bus pick up next week.
