In the books

August 31, 2014 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
Week one of the prep football season is in the books. It was one marked by few surprises. No major shockers took place. The two best games may have played out at Union Local and Brooke, respectively, where both home teams dropped 1-point margins. The Jets fell to Monroe Central while the Bruins lost to Indian Creek. Four expected powers flexed their respective muscles. Martins Ferry got off to a slow start before rolling to a 36-0 blanking of Buckeye Local; Steubenville ripped Cleveland JFK, Wheeling Park trounced Allerdice while Shadyside subdued a talented visitor in Meadowbrook. What may have been the biggest surprise came in the form of Weir's downing of Steubenville Central. The Red Riders have been downtrodden for several years while the Crusaders were coming off a monster season. Week two presents several fine matchups, none better than the one on tap at Fleming Field. Shadyside and Monroe Central have forged a spirited rivalry and both enter fresh off quality wins. The winner sets themselves up for a potentially very successful season. Ironically, one of the most intriguing contests has a pair of 0-1 teams locking horns at Nelson Field where Bellaire welcomes John Marshall. The Big Reds were a team under the radar this summer with a new coach in tow. The Monarchs are in the third year of Coach Rick Goodrich's rebuilding task. Things get no easier for Bellaire in week three as the Big Reds make a short trip down Ohio 7 to tangle with the Tigers at Fleming Field.
