Well, for most the first week of May means very little. I, however, find some of my most enjoyment of the year during this week and it has nothing to do with the possibility of warm temperatures.
The annual Cal Giffin OVAC Track and Field Championship opens Wednesday and runs daily through Saturday at Shadyside and Bellaire. Champions in 18 events for boys and girls in four classes will be crowned over the course of the action. Team champions will also be crowned.
Last week, tennis and softball champions were crowned by the OVAC and this week it's track and baseball that take center stage.
I personally love the four days of track and field. I love watching the strategy of how coaches move athletes around trying to maximize points toward the ultimate goal. It also brings out the best in individuals in terms of times. Remember, next week is the West Virginia regionals and in two weeks, the Ohio districts get under way, so track teams are looking to be at their best.
My predictions for team champions are as follows:
Class 1-A Girls -- St. John Central Boys -- Toronto
Class 2-A Girls -- Steubenville Catholic Boys -- River
Class 3-A Girls -- St. Clairsville Boys -- Meadowbrook
Class 4-A Girls -- Wheeling Park Boys -- Wheeling Park
