October 16, 2008 - Seth Staskey
Since my Major League Baseball playoff predictions were so far off (I am still trying to figure out how the Cubs went up in such flames), I thought I would take a stab at the upcoming High School Football Playoffs. I probably won't fair much better, but oh well, it's a good cause for discussion.
We know locally thus far that Martins Ferry and River are in the fields for Division IV and VI, respectively. Shadyside, Beallsville, Bridgeport, Union Local and St. Clairsville would be in the field if the party began this week, but there is still some work to do for these teams in the next two weeks.
We truly believe all of those teams and Buckeye Local and Harrison Central could be in the dance. It's definitely not out of the question.
I look for the Pilots and Riders to be the squads who carry the local torch (not counting Steubenville as local) the furthest. The Riders have a squad built for winning a regional championship. They run the ball as well as anyone and they play stiff defense.
The same can be basically said for the Pilots, but they are a little bit more multi-faceted with quarterback Dylan Potts leading the way. The Pilots have a stifling defense with senior D.J. Duke leading the way.
Over the course of the next couple of weeks it's going to be interesting to see how everything unfolds.
Our World Series pick is now Phillies over the Rays in six.
