High School Sports

November 7, 2008 - Seth Staskey

It's really tough to fathom the thought that girls basketball practices are week in and boys practices officially begin Monday, Nov. 10.

I am sitting here typing this mentally preparing to cover a Regional Semifinal football game and at the same time we're preparing for our upcoming basketball previews.

While it's sometimes overwhelming, it's also a lot of fun. High School sports takes our minds off the election, the economy, world problems, etc. It takes you back to a time of innocence. Where athletes play because they love it and hope to get some financial help possibly for college through it. It's just a great time of life to say the least. It's amazing how high school sports can captivate so many people.

I had the opportunity to attend the Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Chicago Blackhawks game last weekend in Columbus and it was a great time. Hockey is a sport that is slowly growing on me. It helps that my girlfriend is a hockey fan and really knows and likes the sport. However, sitting there I was calling Rick DeLuca on his cell phone trying to get the score of the Buckeye Local playoff game that night. While sitting at a pro sporting event, I was concerned with how the locals were doing in the playoffs. I guess you could say it's all part of the job, but it's more than that. You cover and write about these teams all year and you take a vested interest in how they do when you aren't there. It's all part of the high school sports excitment.
