End of an Era

December 26, 2008 - Michael Palmer
My wife works at Wal*Mart and as such she is on top of the trends in merchandising. She told me just before Christmas that the VHS tape is going the way of the 8-track.

According to the AP the last shipments of VHS tapes was made to retailers in October and this Christmas is the last for the VHS.

VHS has been on life support for a while, I can't remember the last new release that appeared on tape. And now the Blu-Ray discs are the latest gadget, I don't know if they will replace DVD's or not, but it makes you think.

I still have my VCR and all of our children's childhood memories, my wedding and Christmas past are deteriorating on magnetic tapes inside the black plastic cases with little white wheels.

I guess the only thing constant in this world is change, my bedroom television will no longer pick up signals from the rabbit ear antenna, I asked Santa for a converter box. Maybe I should have asked for some elves to come over and copy the 4 or 5,000 hours of home movies onto to DVD, or maybe Blu-Ray would be the wiser choice.

Maybe I will go home and watch TV Land for reruns of old shows with cell phones that can cause brain cancer in vehicles up to a one-quarter mile radius.
