New Year's Day Bowls
January 2, 2008 - Seth Staskey
If you are reading this blog, then chances are you are a lot, well maybe a little, like me in the way that you crawled up on the couch, trying to recover from New Year's Eve and watched football from 11 a.m. until the wee hours of the morning. Well, if you did, you are a lot like me then. I am just trying to figure out why the national media is so hung up on the best teams having not played for the title. USC steamrolled Illinois (Yes, I know they beat OSU, but come on, it's still Illinois) and Georgia dominated Hawaii. Yes, the Rainbow Warriors. I mean come on. Let's let the other games play out before we rush to judgement that the best teams didn't play for the title or how those blow outs scream the need for a national playoff. Personally, I thought Michigan put forth the best effort. The Wolverines played with a purpose. They wanted to send retiring coach Lloyd Carr out on top and they did it over the defending national champion and heavy favorite Florida. How about the performance Missouri put forth? Think they were probably worthy of a BCS Bowl as well. As bad as the Christmas Day sports selection on television was (See previous blog), the New Year's Eve/Day is about as good as it gets. There was even college hoops and outdoor hockey. I am by no means a hockey fan, but I found that outdoor game to be extremely interesting and even made my buddies watch the shootout. Nothing better than the most exciting time of hockey in an outdoor game.
