OVAC Wrestling -- Day 1
January 22, 2009 - Seth Staskey
I have arrived at WesBanco Arena for the opening night of the Ron Mauck OVAC Wrestling Tournament. After battling through stiffer security to than an airport to get my credentials, I have arrived at my seat at the head table. I am firmly stationed next to T-L Wrestling Writer Brian Cook.
The wrestlers are on the mats warming up currently and Martins Ferry assistant and former Dave Bierkorette Award winner Babe Sidon stopped by to say hello. Just got sang to by Mauck who "welcomed me to his world." I assume of wrestling that is.
Anyway, each year you come to OVAC Wrestling Tournament you see the same folks working at their respective tables and it's kind of like a reunion.
The tournament officially opens at 6 p.m. with the annual Olympic-style opening ceremony. Wrestling begins on eight mats at 6:30 p.m. In the first round, you expect some quick matches as there are many wrestlers who are just over-matched. The same can be said for the most part during Friday's afternoon session, which begins at noon. Friday evening's quarterfinal round is when the matches pick up a bit and become a lot more competitive and entertaining.
Well, it's time to find a restroom, something to drink and settle in to begin typing results, which come fast and furious once the action begins.
Stay tuned because this is the first of five straight weekends of OVAC Championships and The Times Leader and www.timesleaderonline.com are your home for all of the action.
