Somewhere over the rainbow.....

February 14, 2009 - Michael Palmer
In your weekend reading you may remember the article; Girl’s heart filled with special love By KIM LOCCISANO.

A Valentine’s feature about three-year-old Karley Sue Williams of Woodsfield.

I had the opportunity to meet Karley and her family, and from all outside appearances she appears to be a normal thriving girl. She is indeed blessed with a loving and caring family and I know all of us who read of her challenges will include these people in our prayers.

While at her home, her mother told me Karley was very taken with the movie, The Wizard of Oz. Her new toy dog was Toto, her grandmother was the kindly Auntie Em and her Grand pap she calls Uncle Henry.

I thought about this on my hours drive back to the office. The story centers around a Kansas farm girl that is caught in a tornado and knocked unconscious. She awakens far from home in a magical land with witches, wizards, little people, flying monkeys, and other fantastic characters. The movie describes her efforts to get back home. For a child who has spent a third of her young life in a hospital, you can easily see why this would be a favorite world of fantasy in which to escape her daily battle against a killer disease.

Home is the center of a child's life and what happens to Dorothy when a tornado takes her from her home before she has grown up? How does Dorothy meet the challenges of she faces? Is she smart enough - which is the wish made by the Scarecrow; is she brave enough to face very scary situations like the Cowardly Lion; and when it comes to love, I think Karley could teach a thing or two to the Tin Man.

The Wizard of Oz is about seeking the help of an all powerful being that can grant us our wishes so that we can help good triumph over evil and recognizing that we all have the things we need to accomplish these goals already inside of us.

Maybe Karley is a lot smarter than any of us, and she has already figured it out and is trying to teach us a lesson in coping.

“Somewhere over the rainbow..... Skies are blue ….. And the dreams that you dare to dream really do come true”

God Bless You Karley
