THE BRIDGEPORT Board of Education is facing a momentous decision in the near future. The five board members will be charged with selecting a new superintendent of schools. The eventual successor will have some very large shoes to fill. Mark Matz, who recently died while serving in that position, was Bulldog Blue through and through. Matz was born, raised and educated as a Bulldog. He later came back as a teacher and coach before assuming the top spot. Matz loved the school district and it was reflected in his passionate work. Fortunately for the Bridgeport school board, its search has yielded a quality crop of aspiring successors. Former and current superintendents have cast their lots as well as principals and other educators. Local and out-of-area candidates are on the hopefuls' list. The way I see it, if a tried and true Bulldog is in the hunt, the board would be wise to go in that direction. It paid big dividends in Mark Matz.
