Round of 16
March 25, 2009 - Seth Staskey
As I sit here at my desk and look at national sports websites talking about the Sweet 16, I can hardly wait for the next rounds of the tournament to begin Thursday.
Early in the tournament, everyone hopes for upsets and understandably so, but this year the upsets just never transpired. While people's brackets are still relatively strong because you're always better to pick the top seeds, people still enjoy the luster of the little guy doing well. You know David and Goliath.
Anyway, since there were few upsets of the heavy hitters (only one four seed is out and none of the top nine seeds have been elininated), there are going to be some tremendous games this weekend. This is when the tournament is supposed to be at its best. The time when you've got the best 16 teams in the country squaring off.
The upsets are great when they occur, but at some point you've got to watch those teams play a major power and the outcome is normally not real pretty. Other than George Mason, these lower level teams usually check out during this round. This year, I don't forsee any real blowouts in the third round. You look at the lone double-digit seed remaining and it's Arizona, which meets Louisville in the Midwest Region.
The Wildcats -- who were an up-and-down basketball team -- are on the upswing now and got into the field by the skin of their teeth. But, now they are in and playing like did at points during the early portions of the season. Let's not forget that Arizona's probably got three future NBA players. Obviously not your traditional 12-seed.
So for the second straight week, get ready to put the work on the backburner because the Madness is about to resume. Get your brackets out and follow the excitement.
