Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!

April 2, 2009 - Kim Collette

Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!  That is the mantra of The Dillon Panthers head football coach Eric Taylor.  If you don't know what in the blazes I'm talking about, you aren't alone.  NBC's Friday Night Lights is hands down the best show on t.v. that you're not watching!

I know, I're asking yourself why should I waste an hour of my time watching a show about high school football?  You got it.....I'm going to give you reasons why!

1.Friday Night Lights is not just about football.  This is probably the biggest misconception about FNL. is  a part of the show (the name kinda gives that away).  But, it definitely isn't the main focus.  Friday Night Lights is a character driven show.  They are likable and relatable.  They are, by leaps and bounds, more like everyday teenagers than those kiddos on Beverly Hills 90210 or Gossip Girl.  Just an favorite character is Matt Saracen (played by Zach Gilford).  He juggles school, football, an after school job, a girlfriend and caring for his elderly grandmother because his father is stationed in Iraq.  What's more "true" America than that?

2.Documentary style filming.  This makes the show feel more authentic.  The show is filmed with 3 cameras.  Entire scenes are shot  in one take.  Plus, the show is mostly improvised.  This gives the actors freedom to change something they think isn't true to their character.  Most of the time the scenes you watch each Friday are the first takes.  It truly seems like you are watching a documentary. While the show is scripted, the filming style makes it a different experience than watching the normal hour -long drama.

3. There is something for everyone. Ladies---There are believable relationships!  My favorite one on the show is Coach Eric Taylor and his wife Tami Taylor. Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton breathe so much life into these roles it's like watching your own mom and dad on t.v.  One of the reasons I like this relationship so much is that they face the same challenges you and I would face in day-to day life.  Tami Taylor is a working mom on t.v. and this show explores how she balances her relationships with her husband, daughters, students and community.  Working women rejoice......a real women on t.v.!  And....Taylor Kitsch, who plays bad-boy Tim Riggins. (Who in my opinion is better than Ashton Kutcher in his 70's Show days.) Kitsch is not only a talented, young actor, but he's also easy on the eyes.   Guys---of course FOOTBALL!  You will find yourself rooting for a Panthers victory each week.  The great thing about this show  is when the Panthers lose, it makes you feel like "your" team just lost.  Coach Taylor will remind you of your own high school coach---a bit on the scary side, but you know he's always in your corner.

The reason I originally started watching Friday Night Lights  is because I have read H.G. Bissinger's book and have seen the movie.   And, I loved both! Plus, I have to admit......I  high school football!  But this show is much more than just football.  We follow Coach Taylor, his family and his team as they learn valuable life lessons and what happens "when the lights go off" and the real world awaits them.

Start Watching! I promise you won't be disappointed!  Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!

Until next time friends!
