It's definitely hard to believe, but spring tournaments in baseball and softball get under way Saturday around the Eastern District.
It seems like football and basketball season take eons to get through, but baseball and softball zoom to a conclusion in no time. I'm not sure if it's the fact that the weather is nice and people are anxious for summer to get here, but cramming 25 games into something ridiculous like 30 days is absurd in Ohio. The weather hasn't cooperated whatsoever this season. Heck, I noticed when looking at tournament brackets that some baseball teams had only played 12 games thus far.
It won't be long that all of the area teams are eliminated. In my opinion, the area's best chance for advancement in the spring is in softball (not counting individuals in track and field). All of the area's baseball teams seem to be pretty even and the teams in the northern and western part of the district usually have a field day -- no pun intended -- on area squads.
While speaking of tournaments and weather, I must give kudos to the field crew at Chambers' I-470 Complex. They worked diligently Saturday morning to prepare the fields for the OVAC Softball Tournament. Of course some jockeying of the schedule still had to be done due to proms, but at least they are down to just three games remaining.
