Best Buds or simply: it all started with the Schi-Schan

May 8, 2009 - Taste Buds
As some of you may know, the Taste Buds spend A LOT of time together. (If you were not aware, we just told you!)

Not only do we eat together on Taste Bud assignments, we also go to the movies together for Scene It! AND - this is all in addition to sitting right smack-dab next to each other at work 5 days a week.

To spend so much time together without EVER being annoying is a little unrealistic, but still, we must admit: we do get along pretty famously. (Except when we have to fight over salads.)

We attribute our camaraderie to the fact that our lives seem to be frighteningly similar.

“How are your lives so similar?” you ask. Well, we will start with the obvious.

We are both female, grew up in the 80’s, have procreated, work at The Times Leader, and are from the valley. We realize none of these similarities are very startling, but it gets better.

- Although not at the same time, we both went to work at Cedar Point for a summer, AND neither of us fulfilled our contract with the amusement giant...

- We both worked scooping ice cream locally...

- We are both of the same political party. To avoid getting nasty comments on this post, we won’t say which one specifically, but we will say that ours is the finest party.

- We both love Jesus! How great is that guy? If you don’t know him, ya might want to meet him.

- We both agree that Susan Banks (see photo) is the greatest character in Days of Our Lives history and would be elated should she make a return. Bud Em doesn’t want to toot her own horn but she does an amazing Susan impersonation. (Toot toot!)

- We would both like to hang out at The Bigger Jigger, The Regal Beagle and The Boar’s Nest. (Name those shows.)

- Our mothers graduated together! (chills) We didn’t know this until Bud Tricia was perusing a copy of the 1966 Schi-Schan. Check out the photos above.

- We both have brothers who are career military men.

- We both love Johnny Depp, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Cusack, Christopher Walken, Tracy Ullman, Gordon Ramsay, The Beatles, John Ritter and anyone from “Spinal Tap.”

- We both have a strong dislike for Tom Cruise (exception: “Tropic Thunder”), Oprah, and that stinky Heather Mills. Also, we’re not big Beach Boy fans - probably because neither of us knows how to surf.

- We both had crushes on “rockers” in our adolescence. (See photos)

- We both have the annoying habit of quoting “The Princess Bride” even if it’s not relevant.

- We both prefer manly men - rugged and sweaty, fresh from a hard day’s work - as opposed to metrosexuals, those who spend too much time in the mirror or who know there are other designers besides Ralph Lauren.

- Finally we both love to work out a lot - which is good because we both like to eat a lot too!

Here’s a recipe especially for Pittfan - no onions or garlic necessary!

GOOEY BUTTER CAKE from Bethesda’s Kathy Fowkes

1 18 1/2 ounce package yellow cake mix

1 egg

8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, melted

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Combine ingredients and mix well. Pat into a lightly greased 13x9 inch baking pan. Prepare filling.

1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened

2 eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla

8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, melted

1 16-ounce box powdered sugar

Beat cream cheese until smooth. Add eggs and vanilla. Add butter, beat. Add powdered sugar and mix well. Spread over cake mixture. Bake for 40 to 50 minutes. You want the center to be a little gooey, so do not overbake.

Holiday variation: Add a 15 ounce can of pumpkin to the filling, add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Serves 15 to 20
